Dr. Jonathan Tamaiev earned his medical degree from the Technion Faculty of Medicine, where he received rigorous training in clinical medicine and scientific research. He completed his residency in Adult Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate, gaining extensive experience in the evaluation and treatment of complex psychiatric conditions. He went on to complete fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Northwell Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he developed particular expertise in addressing the developmental and emotional needs of younger patients.
Dr. Tamaiev holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a concentration in Behavioral Neuroscience from Hunter College and is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. His early academic work in molecular genetics and neuroscience helped establish a foundation for his evidence-based approach to patient care, and over the past decade he has contributed to the field through research and publications.
In addition to his clinical training, Dr. Tamaiev completed a two-year psychodynamic psychotherapy program at New York University’s Psychoanalytic Association of New York, deepening his understanding of the psychological and relational factors that influence mental health. He has also held an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, where he taught advanced psychopharmacology to graduate-level students.
Dr. Tamaiev currently serves as Medical Director of Tulip Behavioral Health and as an attending physician in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) at Jamaica Hospital, where he is actively engaged in both patient care and the education of residents and medical students. He also provides per diem psychiatric services at the Northport VA and serves as a supervisor for clinicians at Ohel Beis Ezra, overseeing both child and adult psychiatry services.
His clinical expertise encompasses general and child psychiatry with a focus on mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related anxiety disorders, sexual disorders, and the complex interplay between mental health and Orthodox Jewish life. Dr. Tamaiev integrates psychopharmacology and psychotherapy within a biopsychosocial model, tailoring care to each individual’s developmental and cultural context. His work reflects a commitment to delivering thoughtful, comprehensive, and compassionate treatment that supports patients in achieving lasting well-being.
My mission is to provide each patient and their family with my full and undivided attention, fostering a deep understanding of their individual experiences and background. I am committed to building an empathetic and supportive relationship, ensuring that each patient is equipped with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about their care.
Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to psychiatric care, I offer a comprehensive evaluation to identify the most effective treatment options. Whether through medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of modalities, my goal is to empower patients by presenting them with their options and guiding them in making thoughtful decisions about their treatment path.
